In Saint Emilion, vineyards extend into history
near nine hundred years;
an 8th century Breton hermit becomes a local saint
by way of a divine spring, bread turned to wood;
a church carved deep into and out of the hill, in his honour,
missing relics, angels with six wings
and bones in the rock;
Meanwhile, a 17th century ursuline convent,
its crumbles of burnt sugar,
offer samples of a devout women's ancient, secret macaroon recipe.

From the tallest tower, Bordeaux, later, gleams in midday heat.
